One of the weird things about the international model of the Huawei P50 Pro is the use of the LTE version of the Snapdragon 888 chip. As you know, this chip also supports 5G technology, but due to US sanctions, it is not possible for Huawei to use this technology.
Designing

Huawei has always been known for making beautiful and high quality flagships, and the Huawei P50 Pro is no exception. From the start, the phone catches your eye three things: the curvature of the screen and back cover more than expected, the relatively good weight, and the strange and different layout of the camera.
The body of the Huawei P50 Pro is made of a combination of metal and glass and feels slim in the hand. The glass on the screen and the back glass reach the surrounding aluminum frame with the same curvature, and this has given a beautiful symmetry to the phone. Huawei has partnered with Bihadi Electronics to make the rear window and frame, and it is said that for the first time, a special combination of a type of glass is used in a mobile phone that has a higher resistance than the glass panels of other mobile phones. However, it is not yet clear how strong this glass is. Huawei also did not mention the type of glass used on the display.

The edges of the Huawei P50 Pro are more curved than the previous generation. For this reason, if you already have the Huawei P40 Pro in your hand, when you hold the P50 Pro in your hand, you will feel that this phone is more slippery and, of course, a little slimmer. Huawei’s latest flagship is also 14 grams lighter than the previous generation, and in this regard,. Is one of the most suitable flagships in the market with an advanced camera. You do not have to worry about water penetration either, as the Huawei P50 Pro is IP68 certified.

The rear cameras are located in two circular sections, which in our opinion look like binoculars. Leica’s post at the bottom of the camera module also says that we are going to side with a set of quality cameras. We will postpone the examination of how true such a thing is to a little later in the camera section. In the top circle, the main 50-megapixel main camera is placed next to the 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera and the 40-megapixel monochrome camera. The bottom circle also hosts a 64-megapixel telephoto periscope camera with 3.5x optical zoom and up to 7x zoom capability (according to Huawei), a laser transmitter and receiver, and a microphone alongside an LED flash. Of course, this microphone is used for video recording, and the other three microphones, which are located in the lower and upper frames, are the main microphones.

Another important difference from the previous generation is that the screen camera hole is much smaller. At the top of the display is the speakerphone jack; Of course, in fact, the upper speaker is embedded under the screen and its sound is transmitted through these holes as well as a hole on the upper frame. The second speaker is located in the lower frame. These stereo speakers are another improvement over the previous generation mono speakers. The back cover, however, is highly susceptible to hand fat absorption and it is not easy to remove grease. Other highlights of the device frame include the SIM card port and the nano-memory card along with USB-C on the bottom edge and the infrared transmitter on the top edge. The power and volume keys are also located on the right edge.

All in all, the Huawei P50 Pro perfectly evokes the feeling of a premium, luxurious and sturdy phone and sits comfortably in your hand. Of course, in addition to good design, its slimness and relatively good weight also help to induce a pleasant feeling of holding the phone. However, as we have said, sometimes it feels a little slippery and does not convey the feeling of confidence we expect to hold.
Display

Huawei has included a display with an old panel with dimensions of 6.6 inches for its flagship, which apparently reaches the edges with a relatively large curvature. The reason we say “apparently” is that Huawei actually used a flat screen, but the curved edges of the screen make us feel like we’re on the side of the curved screen panel.
The display has been slightly improved in resolution compared to the P40 Pro, and now offers a resolution of 1228 x 2700 pixels, which is slightly higher than 1080p, and a pixel density of about 450 pixels per inch. This resolution and pixel density is very good, but compared to some flagships, the market price is lower. The display also supports HDR10 + and 10-bit color and can display more than one billion colors. The P40 Pro, meanwhile, saw support for 16 million colors.

But one of the most important improvements over the previous generation is the improved refresh rate. In the P40 Pro, we saw a refresh rate of 90 Hz, but now this rate has increased to 120 Hz (by adjusting the rate dynamically). The screen touch sampling rate is also 300 Hz and is expected to have a higher response speed at the touch. Of course, in our experience, we did not feel much superior in this area. Huawei also says that it has improved the display dimming process to reduce flicker in low light. Interestingly, the minimum brightness is a very low number of 1.7 nits, which is seen in fewer phones. Maximum brightness, on the other hand, while decent, can not reach numbers above 1000 nits, lagging behind Apple and Samsung in this respect. If you adjust the screen brightness manually, it will reach about 600 nits.
There are two main options in the display settings; Normal mode next to Vivid. When you select Normal Mode, the monitor automatically switches between DCI-P3 and sRGB color space according to the displayed content and output. Normally, the quality and accuracy of the colors is very accurate. If you select the second mode, Vivid, the colors will be displayed with more saturation and, of course, less accuracy. Huawei has also included an always-on display for this phone, and there are a variety of options for setting up this feature.

There are three options for setting the refresh rate. By selecting the standard mode, the refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz, and if you select the High mode, it will increase to 120 Hz. In this case, in any possible situation, such as the user interface, browser, video watching, etc., the rate is set to 120 Hz and is reduced to 60 or 90 Hz in still images. But for most users, the most commonly used option is the dynamic mode, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate based on the content displayed, and is also in a better category than the High mode in terms of battery consumption. In dynamic mode, in most UI environments, the rate is set to 90 Hz to experience smooth scrolling. But when a game can run at 120 Hz, it switches to this amount and is limited to a minimum of 60 Hz in still images.

Aside from the extreme curvature of the display edges, one of the most important differences from the previous generation is the difference in the selfie camera module. While the P40 Pro was equipped with a selfie camera alongside a TOF sensor, and the module set looked like a capsule in the left corner, the Huawei P50 Pro has a single selfie camera sensor in the middle, which despite the focal length is equivalent to 18mm, can take wider photos. In our opinion, this design style in the Huawei P50 Pro is more beautiful and minimal. We will explain more about the quality of this camera in the section related to cameras.
All in all, the display is of high quality and the color accuracy is very good. In terms of lighting, although it does not catch up with some of the flagships on the market these days, it performs very well even in bright sunlight. The viewing angle of the screen is another positive point, and in extreme angles, we do not see a sharp drop in brightness or distortion of contrast and color temperature.
Software and user interface

The Huawei P50 Pro is available in China with Harmony operating system, but the global version of this phone uses Android 11 along with the EMUI 12 user interface. Of course, there is no trace of the Android name in any part of this user interface. Huawei’s new flagship does not use Google services and you have to rely on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), App Gallery and Petal applications such as Maps and Search to use it.
The design of the EMUI 12 user interface is not much different from previous generations and has only become more beautiful, faster and smoother. Huawei offers a lot of personalization features; From various themes and background images to dozens of options to change the always-on display. It is also possible to download hundreds of themes from the gallery app.

The Huawei P50 Pro, like other Huawei phones, uses multiple images on the lock screen to see a beautiful and different image every time you unlock the phone. Fingerprint unlock and face recognition are also available on this phone, and the optical fingerprint sensor under the display operates with good accuracy and speed.
One of the interesting features of EMUI 12 is the ability to folder applications. You can put up to 9 applications in one folder and open each application directly by touching its icon.
In total, the EMUI 12 user interface has several capabilities and you will not feel any problems when using it. You just have to go to other stores like APKPure to install different apps, especially apps that are not in the App Gallery.
Hardware and efficiency

The Huawei P50 Pro will be available in China with the Kirin 9000 chip and in the global market with the Snapdragon 888 chip. As we said, neither of these two models can use the 5G network . Next to this chip, we see the use of 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space, which is a powerful combination for running all games and applications. To increase the storage space of this phone, you have to use a dedicated Huawei memory card, which is hard to find in the market.
To evaluate the hardware power of the Huawei P50 Pro, we first used the reputable benchmark apps, namely Antoto, Geekbench, PCMarket and TradeMarket. You can see the results obtained in both normal and performance modes below.
Although the Snapdragon 888 is no longer the most powerful chip in the mobile world, it still has enough power to run all applications and games. Huawei P50 Pro normally limits the power of this chip to reduce power consumption. If you activate the performance mode, you will see a significant increase in the power of the phone, but this situation will lead to an increase in energy consumption and heating of the body of the phone.
In the following two tables, we have compared the best results obtained by the Huawei P50 Pro in performance mode with the results of the Galaxy S22 Ultra equipped with the 1st generation Snapdragon 8 chip. The main difference between the two phones is in the GPU performance. Interestingly, Huawei’s new flagship performed better in the PC Mark test.
Phone name | Antutu 9 | GeekBench 5 (Single) | GeekBench 5 (Multi) | PCMark Work 3.0 |
Huawei P50 Pro | 804135 | 1062 | 3295 | 14487 |
Galaxy S22 Ultra | 9337511 | 1218 | 3534 | 1303 |
Comparison of Huawei P50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra benchmark results
Phone name | 3DMark SLE Unlimited | 3DMark WL Unlimited | 3DMark WLE Unlimited |
Huawei P50 Pro | 9999 | 5889 | 1151 |
Galaxy S22 Ultra | 10512 | 10206 | 2443 |
Comparison of Huawei P50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra benchmark results
The image below shows the results of the Huawei P50 Pro stability test using the 3DMark application in both normal and performance modes. According to this test, Huawei’s new flagship will experience a significant drop in performance when used for a long time in heavy applications and games. For comparison, the Galaxy S22 Ultra did not score better than 45.3% and 50.7% in these two tests.

Apart from these results, I ran games like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9 on this phone. Call of Duty Mobile ran smoothly with the highest graphics settings (Very High) and the highest frame rate (Max), and even after half an hour of play, I did not see any lag or drop in frame. Asphalt 9 ran at a frame rate of 60 on this phone. Interestingly, the Huawei P50 Pro is one of the few flagships in the market that allows you to run this game at 60 frames per second.
Sound quality
One of the major improvements of the Huawei P50 Pro compared to the previous generation is being equipped with a stereo speaker, which of course is expected from any flagship these days. As mentioned, the top speaker is both a call speaker and one of the main speakers for playing other sounds. The lower speaker plays a much louder volume; However, the sound balance between the two speakers is also very good. This is especially true when playing games. The total volume of the speaker is very loud and the sound is played with excellent quality and clean, and even as a mobile phone, it has a very good bass.
Camera

Until a few hours ago, the Huawei P50 Pro topped the DxOMark rankings in terms of camera quality, but now that you read this, the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate is at the top of the table. However, Huawei’s flagship still ranks higher than the iPhone 13 Pro Max or Galaxy S22 Ultra. The combination of cameras in this phone is also interesting. In the following, we will review the specifications of 5 cameras of this phone.
- 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, F-1.8, laser autofocus and PDAF, optical image stabilization
- 13-megapixel ultraviolet camera, F.2.2, autofocus
- 64-megapixel telephoto camera, 3.5x optical zoom, F-3.5 factor, PDAF autofocus, optical image stabilization
- 40-megapixel monochrome camera, F 1.6, autofocus
- 13-megapixel selfie camera, F 2.4, autofocus
An interesting feature of the Huawei P50 Pro is that all 5 cameras of this phone are equipped with autofocus capability . The phone’s monochrome camera is also used to capture black and white images, while helping other cameras to measure light and increase the dynamic range.
The Huawei P50 Pro main camera images are the best you can expect from a mobile phone. These images give you the perfect combination of light, contrast and color, and even if you double-magnify them, the detail still stays at an acceptable level. Of course, although the images below were taken without activating artificial intelligence, there is some exaggeration in the saturation of blue and green in some scenes.
The Huawei P50 Pro’s ultraviolet camera is of good quality, but does not reach the main camera in terms of dynamic range and level of detail. Huawei had already chosen a great sensor for the ultraviolet camera in the P40 Pro, but this year it has settled for a relatively ordinary sensor. However, the images of this camera in sufficient light are quite acceptable and are at the level of the best flagships in the market, such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra or iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The Huawei P50 Pro telephoto camera is one of the best cameras in the mobile world and allows you to zoom in and out of the frame without any hassle. The photos of this camera are perfect at 3.5x magnification and can not be criticized. Huawei says that with this camera you can zoom up to 7 times without losing quality, but interestingly, the photos have a very good quality even up to 10x zoom . The images below were taken with 3.5 and 10x zoom, respectively.
The Huawei P50 Pro makes night photography with your mobile phone an enjoyable experience in the simplest possible way; Just point the phone at the desired frame and press the shutter button. The output photo of this phone is the best photo you can expect from a mobile phone. Even Knightmod does not make much of a difference in the result.
The Huawei P50 Pro Ultraviolet Camera also does its best to take good photos at night, and in practice, you can easily share the images of this camera on social networks. However, over-brightening of the image frame, noticeable noise and low detail are the main differences between the images of this camera and the wide-angle camera.
The Huawei P50 Pro telephoto camera usually does not work in the dark, but otherwise you can hardly take a good photo with this camera. However, trying to shoot with this camera in the dark sometimes works.
The Huawei P50 Pro selfie camera is also among the best selfie cameras in the mobile world. This camera uses a wider lens compared to competitors, and you can take selfies even from a very short distance. Of course, a selfie leads to a close-up of the face from a close distance. Therefore, I suggest using the buttons embedded in the camera app to close the frame slightly and take photos from a distance.
Battery and charger

The Huawei P50 Pro has a 4360 mAh battery, which is an increase of 160 mAh compared to the previous generation. This battery capacity may seem low, but in our experience, with one charge, it can easily handle a day of charging, and if the screen refresh rate is 120 Hz and you take pictures and games, you should go to the charger late at night. The PC’s battery test also shows a number of nearly 9 hours, which indicates a charge of about one day with normal use.
The Huawei P50 Pro supports 66-watt supercharger and 50-watt fast wireless charging. To take advantage of this charging power, you must use a special cable with the possibility of transmitting 6 amps along with the charger that comes with the phone. In practice, the charging speed is very high and the phone is charged from zero to about 70% in half an hour, and a full charge takes about 50 minutes, which is very convenient.
Conclusion

For many users, the Huawei P50 Pro is a perfect phone. This phone gives you excellent build quality, quality display, strong hardware, professional cameras and high charging speed, and the combination of these features will meet the needs of most users. However, for users who desperately need Google services and use its applications and services on a daily basis, none of the Huawei phones will be a good option.
