Wi-Fi is one of the best ways to connect to the Internet at home and at work these days. But one of the requirements of using Wi-Fi or wireless internet is to change its password every once in a while for more security. Changing your Wi-Fi password helps make it difficult for strangers to access your Internet connection.
Changing your Wi-Fi password is not a difficult task, and to do so you must log in to the panel of your router or modem and change the information that was previously entered as the password. In this article, we will teach you how to change your Wi-Fi password. Stay with us.
The first step is to change the Wi-Fi password – log in to the modem admin panel
You must first go to your modem admin panel. If you are using a laptop and want to change your router password wirelessly, you must first connect to the Internet by entering the previous password. If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password, you can connect the modem to your computer using an Ethernet cable. In this case, you will no longer need to enter the Wi-Fi password. Note the following:
- The default address for routers is 192.168.1.1, which you must enter in your browser’s address bar and then press Enter. Of course, other addresses such as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1 as well as 10.0.1.1 and 10.0.0.1 are also used in some modems. You must enter the address of your modem in the browser’s address bar. Note, however, that the default address of most modems is usually listed on the label affixed to the back of the modem.
- If none of the above addresses work for you, press Win + R and type cmd in the small window that opens. When cmd opens, enter the ipconfig command and then press Enter. Look for active connections in the list to see something called Default Gateway. The address listed on this line will be your desired address.
- If the above solution does not work, you must reset your modem. Note that different Internet service providers may ask you for different information to reset your modem. But you can always easily reset your modem by phone by calling support. After resetting the modem, it is very likely that one of the addresses mentioned in the first point will work for you.
- Some routers come with the software. If you have already installed the software for your router, you will probably be able to change your WiFi password through it.
Step 2 – Enter your username and password
Now you need to enter the username and password for the router. If you have never changed this option (which is not recommended at all) your router username is probably admin or userAdmin. For the password, you must enter one of the admin or password options to enter your modem settings panel. Of course, as we said, this option can be different in different modems.
- If you have forgotten your modem password and username, you can hold down the Reset button designed on all modems for up to 30 seconds to reset everything. It should be noted that doing so will remove all Internet connection settings. That’s why you need to have information about your internet service. You can get this information from your service provider’s website or ask how to configure the modem by contacting support.
Step 3 – Go to the Wireless section
Now you need to go to the Wireless section. In the image, the modem that is used is called Cisco, and to change the password, you have to go to the Wireless section, which is the same on most modems, but if you do not find this option, you should look for options such as Wireless Settings or Wireless Setup. If your Wireless section includes several other sections, look for the Wireless Security page.
Step 4 – Change modem’s password
Now it’s time to change your password. To do this, look for an option called Password or Passphrase or Shared Key. In this section you can enter your new WiFi password. Some routers may ask you to enter your password twice, but this is not the case with Cisco and D-Link modems.
- Note that it is best to use complex passwords as much as possible. Passwords that can not be guessed by knowing your personality. Make sure the password you choose does not include your name, phone number, or any other personal information. Be sure to use capital English words, spaces, numbers, and symbols such as!, $, And # if needed.
- A strong password contains at least 8 letters.
Step 5 – Change the WiFi password – Determine the type of encryption of the modem or router
One of the things you need to pay close attention to is the type of encryption your router or modem is of, WEP, WPA and WPA2. For the most secure mode you should use WPA2 mode. However, some older devices may not be able to connect to this type of connection, in which case you can use WPA / WPA2. Using WEP is not recommended at all because breaking WEP passwords is easy and can be hacked in less than 30 minutes with current technologies.
Step 6 – Rename the SSID modem or router
This step is optional. But it’s not bad now that you have entered your modem settings, change the title of the router as well. The title of the router is actually the name of the Wi-Fi that appears in the search for computers and phones. It is better that the name of your modem is not related to your own name. Doing so psychologically will reduce the chances of hackers trying to crack the password. Also, routers that use their default name will generally be more targeted by hackers.
Step 7 – Change the WiFi Password – Apply the changes
You must save the changes when they are finished. To do this, you generally need to select the Save Settings or Apply option, which can be different on different modems. The location of this button also varies on routers or modems. It will take a few seconds to apply the changes after clicking on the option. Also note that changing the password will disconnect all devices connected to the modem.
- After applying the changes, you can connect to the modem using the new password.
Change the WiFi password in the TP link modem
First make sure your device is connected to the internet and then open a web browser. If the wireless connection is not established properly with the modem, you can use the network cable for direct connection. Enter 192.168.1.1 in the browser and then press Enter. This address is used by default to access the panel of Tipi Link modems. If you are not able to access the modem panel through the said address, refer to the manual of the device or the information written on its body.
You must now enter the modem username and password to access its admin panel. By default both are equal to admin; But it may be different in some modems that are written on the body. If you have changed your username or password in the past and now do not remember them, you will need to reset them using the physical key on your device.
Then select the Wireless option from the top orange bar. If you are using a dual-channel device, you can define separate passwords for each frequency by clicking on Wireless 2.4 GHz and Wireless 5 GHz.
On some models, you should refer to the Wireless Security section (like the image below), which is accessible from the left menu of the device management panel. In other models, just click on the Security option.
In front of the Authentication Type title, select one of the two modes WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK or WPA2-PSK. If you do not know the difference between the two, it is recommended to choose the second option. In some modems, the modes mentioned are in front of the Authentication Type. Of course, it is also possible to use different WEP modes; But this is no longer recommended today.
Now enter the new password in the text box facing the Pre-shared key. If you are using WEP mode, enter the new password next to Key 1.
In front of the phrase System Restart with: Select the Current Settings option and then click on the RESTART button. Now after the modem is turned on again, a new password will be required to connect to it.
Change WiFi password in D-Link modem
As in the previous section, after making sure you are connected to the network, open a web browser and enter the address 192.168.0.1. This address is used to access the admin panel of most D-Link modems; But some models may use a different address. If you can not enter the modem settings panel with the address provided, use the manual or instructions written on the body of the device. Also, if the wireless connection is not established, you can use the network cable to connect the computer to the modem.
If you are unable to find the address you need to access the admin panel, you can enter http://dlinkrouter in the address bar and then press Enter. This address is used in newer models of D-Link modems.
If you still can not access the modem admin panel, you can right-click on the network icon in Windows and select Open Network and Sharing Center to go to Connections. Then click the Details button and copy the IPv4 Default Gateway address into the browser. On Mac OS devices, go to System Preferences from the Apple menu and click Network. Select the active network and click Advanced. Now by going to the TCP / IP tab you can use the address written in front of the phrase Router.
You will now need a username and password to enter the modem settings panel. The default username in most D-Link modems is equal to admin. Also, most of the company’s products do not have a default password; However, if a password is requested, you can use admin again.
If the combination of the said username and password is not correct, you can refer to the manual, information on the box or body of the device. You will also be able to find the default values by searching for your modem model at www.routerpasswords.com . To do this, all you have to do is go to the D-Link section from the site menu and then select your modem.
If you still can’t log in, you may have changed your username or password in the past and you may not remember it now. In such cases, you will have no choice but to reset the modem with the physical key located on the body. After turning on the device again, you can enter the admin panel with the default username and password.
By entering the modem management panel, click on the Wireless tab. If you do not see a tab with such a title, click on Wireless Settings in the left menu. Then go to Wireless Security or Security Mode.
In front of the phrase Wireless Security Mode: Select WPA2 mode. You can also click Enable WPA2 Wireless Security on some models. The said standard enjoys higher security than its first generation and is recommended by most experts; However, if you are using older devices that do not support such a standard, use WPA mode.
Now enter the new modem password in front of the phrase Pre-Shared Key. It is better to use codes that do not contain English words and no one can guess them. Combining uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers is a secure way to create secure passwords. Also enter the password again to confirm in the Confirm Passphrase box.
Finally, click Save Settings at the bottom of the page to save the changes and disconnect all devices. Now you need to use the new password to reconnect to the modem.
